Founder effect

« Back to Glossary Index

Founder effect represents a situation where one or a few individuals disperse and become the founders of a new, isolated population, like the first colonizers of a recently deglaciated arctic island. These pioneers contain usually just a small subset of the alleles present in the source population and others may change drastically in frequency.
