Natural selection

« Back to Glossary Index

Natural selection is the only mechanism that produces adaptive evolutionary changes.

For evolution to occur by natural selection, the genetic variation must be related to the number of offspring left in the next generation. It is important to remember that natural selection and evolution are not the same; natural selection is a mechanism, whereas evolution is an outcome. Natural selection can lead to evolution, but natural selection is only one of several mechanisms that can produce evolutionary change.
