In situ

« Back to Glossary Index

Latin phrase that translates to “on site”. In situ glacial survival implies that the organism survived full-glacial conditions at a location which it already occupied before glaciation. Such location is referred to as an in situ glacial refugium. On the other hand, a glacial refugium located distant from the organisms current distribution is referred to as an ex situ refugium.
